By 1983 BMW Motorsport GmbH had expanded its workforce to 380 employees – and motor sport had long since become just a part of what they did. BMW Motorsport GmbH had grown into a specialist development company focusing on high-performance engine and chassis technology, and it created accessories and customised vehicles for owners. The BMW M5 and M635CSi were fitted with the engine from the M1. The high-revving pleasure of 286 hp brought smiles to many faces, as these dream cars made themselves very much at home.
