From 1991, customers could also order the popular BMW 525i Sedan (E34) with all-wheel drive. This therefore made the BMW 525iX the first all-wheel drive vehicle in the BMW 5 Series. The primary intention was to offer greater driving safety in adverse conditions on the road during winter, and improved traction under all conditions. Another aspect was more safety when travelling round bends and good control when quick action was necessary. The all-wheel-drive technology already familiar from the BMW 3 Series (E30) once again underwent further development in the BMW 525iX. Electronically controlled, fully variable distribution of drive torque between the front and rear axles was provided for the first time. In December 1995, the BMW 525iX Sedan was discontinued. A total of nearly 5,000 units had been produced up to that date.
