In 2013, the BMW Group and Toyota launched a development collaboration for a fuel cell system to power cars. A small series of the BMW 5 Series GT was fitted with the fuel cell from the Toyota Mirai in 2015 and then presented at the 2017 Hannover Messe under the banner “NewEnergy-4-Mobility2050”.

Manufacture of the fuel cell system got underway in August 2022 at the hydrogen competence centre in Garching. A short while later, production began of the vehicles making up the BMW iX5 Hydrogen pilot fleet, which in 2023 were sent into action around the world for test and demonstration purposes. The combination of a powerful battery and fuel cell opens up new possibilities and fresh perspectives.
