The BMW M6 GT3 replaces the Z4 GT3, which has been in use since 2010, as the race car for Group GT3 customer racing. For the racetrack, the large coupe has to lose weight – more than 600 kg. Moreover, there are extensive aerodynamic modifications and further adaptations required for racing. For example, the outer shell is made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic in order to meet the guidelines for GT3 vehicles.
From January 2016, BMW enters the coupe in various racing series worldwide. During the first year, victories are already being celebrated on race tracks in Europe and North America. However, the BMW M6 GT3 achieves the greatest triumph of its career at the Nürburgring. After the last success in 2010, fans have to wait ten more years for the 20th overall victory. Four times in this decade, BMW teams only narrowly miss victory before the time finally comes at the anniversary edition of the race in 2020. Nick Catsburg, Nick Yelloly and Alexander Sims are at the top after a turbulent race in the #99 BMW M6 GT3 from ROWE Racing. Fifty years after the first and ten years after the last victory, the circle is completed on a rainy 27 September 2020 on the world's most challenging race track.
